Moorthorpe is a small village, in Pontefract, West Yorkshire; it was simply a farming village up until 1881 when the South Kirkby Colliery was sunk making it mainly a pit village; the colliery employed around 3000 workers in its prime, but unfortunately the pit was closed down in 1988.

Today South Elmsall, South Kirby, Upton and Moorthorpe, locally known as SESKU, have all but merged into one large village, come town.
