He wrote a number of gardening books, novels and a biography.


After leaving school, in 1964, he went to work as an apprentice gardener for Ilkley Council; he left there in1968 to go to the Shipley Art and Technology Institute, to study for a City and Guilds in horticulture; he then went on to study at the Hertfordshire College of Agriculture and Horticulture for the National Certificate in Horticulture, before finally moving on to the renowned Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew to study for a Diploma in Horticulture.

After graduating, he stayed on at Kew, being employed as a supervisor and latterly a staff trainer, leaving to pursue a career in gardening journalism in 1974; he made a few television appearances as a horticulturist in the programme Nationwide and then became well known as the host of the long-running show Gardener’s World; he has also presented Ground Force, Songs of Praise and British Isles: A Natural History.
